February 2022: The color purple – harbinger of spring

I am not sure why purple is considered an autumn color. It seems to me that purple is the first color of late winter to emerge: the promise of spring. Violets, crocus, and hyacinths, and all varieties of purples start to dot the winter landscape.

Welcome back diners! February is here which means that spring is not far behind. Each time this year, large clumps of violets, like the ones pictured above, emerged all over my grandparents property. My grandmother would send me outside to pick bouquets of these perky little cuties.

Not long ago, I found these beautiful deco Royal Worcester bullion cups in purple and green, like the sweet woodland violets, which inspired this violet table setting. Hope you enjoy.

This set of bullion cups was purchased from The Key Antiques in Lakewood https://www.facebook.com/thekeyantiques . Undoubtedly, David has the best antiques in the Puget Sound!

Like the early spring flowers, I added a variety of purples to off-set the greens and browns similar to a garden ready to come back to life.

I selected a variety of violet salad plates. This one is a hand-painted unnamed violet pattern by Nippon

Here is Mikasa French Violets. I used my grandmothers silver flatware: Gorham Greenbrier. I love the sweet, simple pattern…many fond childhood memories!

This is a contemporary pattern Birds Foot Violet by Georges Briard

Ah, lovely Piccard! I love to have a variety of these old bread and butter plates. They can serve so many purposes re-envisoned today as the perfect small plates for many items on the table.

Recently purchased covered veg dish by Haviland, perfect for the occasion.

A new series of Napkin Blings made just for this table.

Thank you for being here today; I hope you enjoyed this vibrant woodland violet table setting, please share with others who might enjoy this blog. This violet series of Napkin Blings will be available shortly in the Dinners in the DR shop. Please stop in and see other ways in which we’ve re-envisioned vintage items.

Hope to see you back later in February for a closer look at beautiful silver flatware. Until then, enjoy something beautiful! ~d
